I have been wanting to try a book box subscription for months now – a while ago, I did a post on different YA book box subscriptions, and decided that my favourite was Book Box Club! At YALC in July, I ordered the September box, and have been looking forward to it all summer long – it was a wonderful surprise last week when I got home from school and it had arrived! This month’s theme was ‘Outlaws’, and I was so happy with everything in the box.
This month’s box contained a signed, hardback copy of A Jigsaw of Fire and Stars by Yaba Badoe – this is the story of fourteen-year-old Sante who, after seeing elements of a recurring dream come to life, sets out to discover more about her family and her past. This is an own voices novel, and it sounds really intriguing – I can’t wait to read it!
This month is Book Box Club’s first birthday, and so the September box had an extra YA proof – Optimists Die First by Susin Nielson. I have actually already read this book, however I loved it a lot and do not have a copy, so I was very happy to find this proof in the box! This is about a girl, Petula, who is a firm pessimist. A family tragedy has stopped her from seeing the positives in life, but her world view is turned around when Jacob, an optimist, joins her group therapy class. My review is here if you want to see my thoughts on this book!
Some other lovely book extracts and cards included in the box were:
- The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli sample – this book is out at the beginning of October, and I have been hearing quite a lot about it, so I’m glad to have this sample so I can find out a bit more.
- Tangleweed and Brine by Deirdre Sullivan sample – I have been thinking about buying this book, so I am really looking forward to reading an extract of this!
- The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James postcard – this book has a completely beautiful cover, which looks lovely as a postcard.
- Marauders postcards – I am totally in love with these, and cannot wait to put them on my wall! There were two of each postcard, so I gave my second set to a fellow Marauder-loving friend, and some envelopes (although there is no way I am giving these postcards away).
This box came with some gorgeous bookish goodies:
- A Robin Hood bookmark – extremely cute, and perfect for me, as I never seem to have bookmarks!
- Sante socks – very snuggly, and perfect for the upcoming winter.
- Inej lipbalm – this lipbalm is cinnamon and caramel scented, and smells absolutely gorgeous!
- John Green pencils – these pencils have the titles of John Green books on them, including the upcoming Turtles All the Way Down with the release date next to it!
- A birthday biscuit – which I ate immediately upon opening the box.
This box really made my week, and I will definitely be ordering another subscription from Book Box Club in the future! Please let me know if you’ve tried this book box subscription, or any other one, as I love hearing about them!
I also promptly ate the biscuit after opening the box. It was delicious!
